HELPLESS HELPERS

On the psychological difficulties of working in supportive professions

The source of helpers’ helplessness is the excessive strain placed on their altruistic ideals about socially-minded service. Published here as a paperback in a revised and extended edition, this classic work describes the detrimental effects of inflexible ideals in the lives not only of individuals but also groups and populations.
