WOMEN OF THE REICHSTAG: Stepping Into a New World (Vol. III)

  • The third volume of the series follows the women parliamentarians in their emigration to New York.
  • Meticulously researched and written with a great eye for detail: a new perspective on German history as told by the brave women who refused to let themselves be silenced.

New York, 1941. After the murder of her husband by National Socialists, Paula Hagedorn found herself forced to emigrate due to her political role as an SPD delegate. She has already made a name for herself as a benevolent advocate for the politically persecuted in the USA, particularly because of her work on behalf of children in need of help. Paula offers her friend, Marlene von Runstedt, refuge, who just escaped Germany via France, Spain and Portugal. Marlene fled to protect not only her own life, but also that of Lena, the daughter of Sonja Grawitz, and Justus von Ostwald, who has grown into a young woman. Seeing Paula’s work and the differential treatment of the Jewish and political refugees arriving in New York sparks Lena’s interest, and she assists Paula in founding the “Worker’s welfare USA – help for victims of National Socialist persecution”, which sparks a burgeoning political interest in her. In the course of this work, she encounters a young American man, just as he is about to be sent to Europe as a bomber pilot as part of the war effort.
