HOW MUCH – What We Do with Money and What Money Does with Us

  • Spiegel-bestselling author Mareice Kaiser writes about our relationship with money.
  • A remarkable social commentary presenting us with an impetus to be more critical of our society.
  • Her book Das Unwohlsein der modernen Mutter was an instant hit, landing on the Spiegel bestseller list.

Money isn’t everything? But money certainly is many things: power, status, livelihood. And it is the cause of many feelings: shame, envy, jealousy. But also security, happiness, freedom. What does money do with us, and what do we do with money?

Mareice Kaiser tells the story of her own relationship with money and meets people whom she talks to about money. From people who pick up bottles in the street to collect a deposit when returning them, to millionaires, she asks them: how much money is enough? How much makes you happy? Who should have more? Who should have less? How could money be distributed more equally? Poverty and riches, cold and warmth, credit cards and reminders, success and hardship, opportunity and fate, power and powerlessness, and everything in between.

Kaiser provides us with a perspective on a country where some freeze while others have underfloor heating. Personal stories demonstrate the existence and provide the framework for an analysis of a structure of power that is highly unequal and dictates how our society functions.
