In the 19th century, two men set off to conquer the sky. In the Pomeranian village of Anklam, young Otto Lilienthal seeks refuge in nature. When he observes storks flying in the marshlands, the desire to fly like a bird himself one day begins to form. At the same time, Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin is growing up in an aristocratic family near Lake Constance. He is interested in technology and mechanics from an early age, but has to comply with his father’s wishes and initially joins the army. But he holds onto his great dream of one day building a mighty airship.

Two men, obsessed with the age-old dream of flying, who duel over the sovereignty of the skies from a distance. Laughed at by others as fantasists, they don’t allow themselves to be diverted, even if it initially seems as if their critics were right …

Axel S. Meyer , born in Braunschweig in 1968, studied German Language and Literature, and History. He lives in Rostock, where he works as a reporter and editor for the Ostsee-Zeitung . He has already published several historical novels with the Rowohlt publishing house, including a successful series about Hakon, the Viking, and most recently Der Mann, der die Welt ordnete   about the swedish naturalist Carl von Linné.
