FRÄULEIN GOLD: The Red Island (Vol. V)

Berlin, 1926. Hulda Gold finds herself in a difficult situation: single, pregnant and without any source of income. Fortunately, the young doctor Grete Fischer offers her a position as an assistant in her small practice in the Rote Insel (Island), until the time of her confinement. Their patients are primarily working women living in the depths of poverty and despair. Hulda soon notices that Grete seems to be flouting certain laws and is also in contact with a communist group with radical views that Hulda does not agree with. Political tensions in Berlin are rising. Conflict breaks out again and again between the communists, the supporters of the National Socialist movement, and the criminal “Ringverein” gangs. In the Rote Insel district, these swirling tensions boil over into violence. The murder of one of Hulda’s neighbours prompts the sudden appearance of former police inspector Karl North, who seems to be pursuing his own interests in investigating the case. Hulda finds herself caught in the middle of it all, between multiple fronts, and must face the greatest challenge of her life.
