DETOUR TO SUMMER

One coast down, always along the sea.

For Martin, 49, a worn-out musician and one-hit wonder from 20 years ago, the route is set: his goal is a music festival in Portugal, his big chance at a comeback. When his sister asks him to watch her son Karl while she undergoes rehab, Martin's answer is clear: no. He cannot deal with a 12-year-old right now. He sends the boy to stay with Grandma and sets off in his old station wagon, heading south. But soon after he hits the road, a stowaway makes himself known: Karl is determined to join him on the journey to Portugal. 
The unlikely travel companions – Martin, the man-child, and Karl, who is much too grown-up for his age – set off on an adventure-filled journey. They will help refugees, commit petty theft, and perform as street musicians. And Karl will experience his first love, in the glow of a summer that changes everything.
