Emma and Daniel are living their great love and planning to marry next summer. But Daniel begins to suffer from back pain and is eventually diagnosed with cancer. Instead of planning the wedding, Emma starts the new year with Daniel's funeral. The loss is unbearable, and Emma withdraws into her grief. On her birthday, she receives an unusual gift: a small stuffed dog with "Sam" written on its triangular scarf. This was Daniel's idea. He had made arrangements so Emma would not lose all joy in life after his death. At a local animal shelter, a mixed-breed terrier named Sam is waiting for her.
Initially, Emma is not thrilled, but Sam will not let her hide away. Their walks become longer, and visits to the dog school more frequent. When Sam gets injured in the woods, Emma gets to know the local vet, Benjamin, who is charming, empathetic, and great with Sam. Emma starts to wonder if there might also be healing for the deep wounds in her heart.
