YOU ARE LUCKY TO HAVE ME – Online Granny Runs for Office

  • How high can cemetery fees be? Who has the most beautiful balcony box? Local politics has never been more entertaining than with the famous online grandma.

We would vote for Renate!

Renate Bergmann is making her escape: out of Berlin and into the supposedly peaceful Spreeweide in Brandenburg, where her new retirement home awaits, alongside Stefan, Ariane, and the kids. It needs a good cleaning anyway! But no sooner has she arrived than she clashes with Mayor Brummer. "Why do you not run for office yourself?" they say. And they did not have to tell her twice! At 82, Renate – just like Adenauer – is just getting started. Soon enough, her election posters are hanging on every streetlamp, no diamond symbol, but a chic blazer. Because looks count!
Whether it is at the opening of the "Wurzelzwerge" kindergarten carousel or the contest for Spreeweide’s best flower box, Renate is right in the middle of it, getting all the attention as local reporter Trutsch snaps his photos. Who knows more about overpriced cemetery fees, grimy park benches, or the bus schedules defaced by the "rowdies"? Renate is knee-deep in the campaign – no official car or bodyguard needed, just her trusty Koyota and her gang: Gertrud, Kurt, and Ilse. Mayor Brummer better watch out!

Renate Bergmann

Renate Bergmann lives in Berlin. She helped clear bombing debris after WWII, worked for the East German state railway, is a household professional and a four-time widow. In 2013, she took to Twitter and began microblogging about her insights and exploits. Her books, meanwhile, have won over the analogue world. Torsten Rohde , born in 1974, studied business administration and worked as a financial controller. His Twitter account @RenateBergmann, in which he tweets about Renate’s exploits, became an internet phenomenon. His book Ich bin nicht süß. ich hab bloß Zucker , published under his pseudonym Renate Bergmann, was a phenomenal success, and was followed by many other successful books and reading tours.
