THE RETURN OF TERROR – How Jihadism Challenges Us

Islamist terrorism has returned: October 7 has fueled the Middle East conflict more than anything else in recent decades. The nervous and indecisive reactions in Germany and Europe reflect the political landscape. Beneath that, a new movement targeting Israel and Jews is emerging, which is difficult to identify and stop. Sometimes it is possible, but often it is not.

Peter R. Neumann, a leading terrorism expert, says the jihadist threat is back – maybe even stronger than ten years ago. Since October 7, there have been eight attempted terrorist attacks in Europe, more than the entire previous year. Europe faces a new wave of jihadist attacks, this time targeting Jewish lives. This is a major challenge for the idea of Europe as a place where people of different backgrounds and religions can live together peacefully. Populists and right-wing extremists might also benefit politically from this wave of jihadist attacks.
