Coralin is the daughter of a prominent Hamburg shipping family - but she must flee her old life and finds herself, from one day to the next, a governess in the seaside resort of Norderney.

During her very first week, she and her pupil Emmi are caught in a sea emergency during an excursion. The North Sea is unpredictable, and the ebb tide pulls their rowboat far out onto the open ocean!

Day laborer Onnen simply cannot comprehend the ignorance of these resort guests ... They have no respect for the sea and its tides! When young Emmi and her governess Cora also require an expensive rescue, he has little desire to guide the two around the island. Needing money desperately, however, he takes the job anyway.

Soon, Cora realizes that the reserved Onnen means more to her with each passing day. Yet, he regularly disappears, only returning days later in a foul mood. What is he hiding? She, too, strictly guards her own secret: No one must find out who she truly is - or why she had to leave Hamburg ...
