UNDERSTANDING DEMENTIA – Support and Answers for Caregivers

  • Transform your approach to dementia care with practical insights.
  • Empathetic and full of useful tips.

Enhancing quality of life for dementia patients and their caregivers.

Dementia can be overwhelming, exhausting, and disempowering. Registered nurse Marion Ponelies understands the struggles of both patients and their families, knowing the information, advice, and encouragement they need. She begins by outlining the essential foundations for nurturing a loving relationship with someone with dementia. This includes not only acquiring basic knowledge about the condition but also learning new behavioral strategies – and, sadly, saying goodbye to the person as they once were.

The main part of the book addresses the questions of caregivers, organized by topic for easy navigation. These topics cover challenging behaviors, eating and drinking, clothing and personal care, sleep and restlessness, relationships, and handling accusations or thoughts of escape.

Marion Ponelies

Marion Ponelies , born in 1976, is a nurse with extensive experience in psychiatry and elder care. After completing her state examination in health and nursing at the University Hospital Frankfurt/Main, she pursued dementia training at the University of Newcastle, Birmingham, and London. Her expertise in caring for dementia patients was further enhanced through training in Interpersonal Therapy for Depression and Aggression Management. As the director of a day care facility in a senior home, Marion had many conversations with the families of dementia patients. Through these discussions, she realized how isolated they often felt when dealing with this complex illness, and she decided to change that.
