‘Rendezvous in Infinity’ is the most successful and demanding work of literature completed by Klaus Mann prior to his exile. The novel paints a fascinating portrait of the “lost generation” in Germany during the Weimar Republic: Young people torn between longing and despair, political rebellion and individual escapism. With the character of dancer and opportunist Gregor Gregori, Klaus Mann created an interesting precursor of his Mephisto hero, Hendrik Höfgen. The afterword by Klaus Mann expert Fredric Kroll provides information and insight into the creation and background of the novel.

Klaus Mann

Klaus Mann was born in Munich in 1906, the first child of Thomas and Katia Mann. He began his literary career as the enfant terrible of the Weimar Republic. After 1933 he became an important figure in the German literary elite that had been forced into exile by the Nazis. Klaus Mann’s death in 1949 in Cannes was caused by an overdose of sleeping pills.
