Serafina, an apothecary for the poor, and Achaz, a city physician, are once more investigating the case – and rearing a daughter – together.

September 1419. Serafina, an apothecary for the poor, and the city physician Adalbert Achaz dote on their one-year-old daughter Kathrin. They are watching a local performance of a farce in which Serafina’s son, Vitus, is playing a maid. Wearing garish make-up and a red wig, the maid chases a farmer with a breadknife. As the audience double over laughing, the maid flees the scene. Then, to everyone’s shock, an audience member is discovered with a knife in his chest. It is the rich master tanner, Oblathus. And so begins a very personal nightmare for Serafina.
